// Can Tinnitus Cause Speech-in-Noise Deficits?
// This study investigated the relationship between tinnitus and speech-in-noise (SIN) perception using observational data and genetic analyses in young adults. Tinnitus was linked to poorer SIN performance, but genetic analysis showed no causal effect of tinnitus on SIN deficits; instead, both share a genetic basis involving brain regions tied to hearing, cognition, and emotion. Gene functions related to synaptic activity were enriched, while cochlear cell types showed no association. These findings suggest that tinnitus and SIN deficits co-occur due to overlapping genetic factors affecting brain synaptic function.
