// Oral Feeding and Aspiration Risk in Preterm Infants Receiving Nasal High-Flow Respiratory Support: A Cross-Sectional Study

// This study aimed to assess aspiration risk during oral feeding in preterm infants receiving nasal high-flow (NHF) therapy by correlating NHF flow rates with oropharyngeal aspiration (OPA) severity. Researchers conducted clinical feeding evaluations and videofluoroscopic swallow studies on 20 preterm infants, measuring aspiration using the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS) and recording NHF flow rates. Results showed no correlation between aspiration severity and unadjusted flow rate, but a significant inverse correlation when adjusted for weight. The findings suggest some stable preterm infants may safely feed orally on NHF, emphasizing individualized risk assessment rather than NHF use alone.
