// Frequency, Form, and Function of Child Communication During Early Shared Book Reading Experiences

// This study examined communication frequency, form, and function in children aged 6 months to 3 years during natural shared book reading with caregivers. Using detailed coding of 557 home reading sessions, researchers found that narrative and concept books led to longer reading and more child communication, with narrative books eliciting more complex language. Over half of child communicative acts involved gestures to initiate joint attention. These findings highlight how book type and joint caregiver-child focus support early language development and literacy skills.
