// This study describes a new surgical technique using an apical ground electrode to improve cochlear implant function in patients with cochlear ossification and incomplete electrode insertion. The method involves placing an extracochlear ground electrode at the cochlear apex to enable current steering through ossified areas. Testing in three patients showed the procedure was safe and enhanced sound perception after device programming adjustments. The technique may expand stimulation capabilities and improve outcomes in selected patients with challenging cochlear conditions.
