// Age-Independent Bilateral Advantage in Quiet Speech Recognition: A Matched Longitudinal Analysis of Adult Cochlear Implant Users

// This study examined whether bilateral cochlear implants (BiCI) provide better speech perception in quiet than unilateral implants (UniCI) by analyzing 120 well-matched adult patients over 12 months. Using longitudinal models, BiCI showed a significant advantage for monosyllabic word recognition that was not due to greater device use and was consistent across age groups. The findings suggest that BiCI benefits arise from neurophysiological mechanisms rather than motivational factors and support expanding adult bilateral implantation coverage. Further large studies are needed to confirm these results and explore underlying neural processes.
