// This study examined how Mandarin speakers perceive lexical tones using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) compared to the traditional two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) task. Results showed VAS captured more gradient, fine-grained differences within tone categories than 2AFC, which showed sharper categorical boundaries. The findings suggest VAS is a sensitive method for studying suprasegmental perception and help clarify discrepancies in categorical perception research as due to task differences rather than theoretical issues.
