// Cochlear deafferentation impairs perception of acoustic onset cues in kainate-exposed budgerigars
// This study investigated how cochlear synaptopathy, induced by excitotoxicity, affects tone-in-noise detection in trained budgerigars. Using intracochlear kainic-acid to cause synaptopathy, the researchers found that animals detected long tones normally but showed impaired detection of short tones presented simultaneously with noise onset. The findings suggest cochlear synaptopathy selectively disrupts perception of acoustic onset cues. This impairment could underlie difficulties in speech perception in noisy environments for humans with synaptopathy.
