// Role of neural activity during inter-token intervals in sound sequence discrimination-II, non-primary auditory cortex

// This study investigated how silent gaps between sound tokens affect neural discrimination of periodic versus aperiodic sound sequences in mouse auditory cortex. Using single-unit electrophysiology, the researchers found that non-primary auditory cortices can differentiate these sequences but silence does not enhance this selectivity. In contrast, the primary auditory cortex (A1) shows a unique increase in selectivity linked to silent intervals, with stronger buildup of activity for periodic sequences in both spikes and gamma-band LFP. These results highlight A1's specialized role in processing temporal sound structure influenced by silent gaps.
