// This study investigated word and nonword reading in Maltese individuals with Down syndrome, focusing on cognitive-linguistic skills and orthographic depth. Using assessments in Maltese and English, participants with Down syndrome showed better word than nonword reading, especially in English with its deeper orthography. Their reading in English was linked to visual-perceptual skills and vocabulary, while these associations were weaker in Maltese. The findings suggest that orthographic depth affects decoding and that phonological training should be tailored to orthographic differences.
