// Five-year-old children engage temporal but not frontal mechanisms during morphosyntactic processing of sentences

// This study used fMRI to examine how five-year-old children process finiteness-related verb morphemes in spoken sentences, focusing on phonological and semantic brain mechanisms. Results showed strong activation in temporal regions, especially the posterior superior temporal gyrus linked to phonological processing, but not in frontal areas associated with semantic processing. There was no correlation between brain activation and language skill levels. The findings suggest young children rely on temporal, phonological mechanisms for morphosyntactic processing, with the frontal language network not yet developed.
