// Oscillatory brain activity reflects semantic and phonological activation during sentence rehearsal
// This study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to examine how the brain maintains semantic and phonological information in verbal short-term memory. Participants rehearsed short sentences while hearing auditory distractors that were semantically or phonologically related or unrelated. Semantic interference activated the left middle temporal and bilateral medial temporal regions, while phonological interference was more widespread and left-lateralized, involving temporal, frontal, and parietal areas. These findings show distinct but overlapping neural bases for semantic and phonological maintenance, with transient distractor effects that do not impair sentence repetition.
