// Interplay of age, speech perception in noise, standard and extended high-frequency hearing, and cochlear synaptopathy in individuals with normal audiograms
// This study examined how age-related changes in hearing relate to difficulty understanding speech in noise (D-SiN-NH) in adults with normal audiograms. Using structural equation modeling on data from 60 adults, the researchers found that extended high-frequency hearing loss reflects subclinical outer hair cell dysfunction, not cochlear synaptopathy. Although signs of cochlear synaptopathy were present with age, neither it nor high-frequency hearing loss independently explained speech-in-noise difficulties. Instead, slight elevations in standard-frequency hearing thresholds within the normal range were linked to age-related speech-in-noise challenges.
