// This study examined how binaural summation affects speech recognition in competing speech by testing cochlear implant (CI) users and normal-hearing listeners. Speech recognition was measured with same-sex and different-sex masker talkers using one ear or both ears. Significant binaural summation depended on masker sex and listener group, occurring in bilateral CI users with same-sex maskers and in single-sided deaf and normal listeners with different-sex maskers. The results suggest that binaural summation is influenced by interaural performance and masker characteristics, but standard models overestimate summation in CI users due to variable binaural processing.
