// Social Disadvantage and Language Disorder: Is Dissociating Possible?
// This study examined whether children from lower socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds are at greater risk of developmental language disorder (DLD) compared to higher SES peers, focusing on Russian-speaking children. Using standardized language tasks, rural low-SES children performed worse than urban middle-SES children, particularly on expressive syntax tasks like sentence repetition, which was highly affected by SES but less by DLD. Following multistep directions distinguished children with heritable DLD within low-SES groups, suggesting this task may help differentiate DLD from SES effects. Overall, social disadvantage impacts expressive and receptive language differently, with certain receptive tasks serving as potential diagnostic markers for DLD in low-SES children.
