// This study assessed how loudspeaker setup and dialogue-to-background sound ratios impact perceived speech understanding and sound quality in listeners with and without hearing loss. Using recorded clips played through television, stereo, and surround sound speakers, participants rated speech clarity and sound quality at two dialogue-to-background levels (+7 and +12 dB). Findings showed better speech understanding with higher dialogue ratios, poorer ratings of surround sound by hearing-impaired listeners, and no improvement from surround sound for speech understanding in this group. The study suggests surround sound is not effective for improving speech clarity in listeners with hearing loss but supports personalized audio recommendations.
