// Medical risk factors associated with listening difficulties in children
// This study investigated whether prematurity, head injury, otitis media, and extended high frequency (EHF) hearing loss in infants predict later listening difficulties (LiD) in children aged 6-13 with normal audiograms. Using caregiver reports, medical records, and testing, the researchers found that prematurity, head injury, and EHF hearing loss were significantly more common in children with LiD and linked to poorer speech perception. Ventilation tube history was not associated with LiD. The findings suggest that early medical risks increase the likelihood of LiD, a disorder affecting learning and communication.
