// This study investigated how hearing aid status affects brain activation in adults with age-related hearing loss during a verbal working memory task. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy and an auditory N-back task, researchers compared typical-hearing adults, experienced hearing aid users, and newly fitted users. Experienced users showed brain activation patterns and task accuracy similar to typical-hearing adults, while newly fitted users had reduced activation under higher cognitive load. The results suggest that hearing aid experience influences cortical activity beyond just improved audibility.
