// Slc16a5 (MCT6) knockout induces sex-dependent changes in auditory function, hair cell viability and cochlear transcriptomic programs in the mouse

// This study examined the role of monocarboxylate transporter 6 (Mct6) in cochlear function using Mct6-deficient mice. Researchers found Mct6 is crucial for cochlear stress resistance, with females showing early hearing loss and increased hair cell loss, while males displayed temporary auditory protection. RNA sequencing revealed sex-dependent changes in estrogen-responsive genes and stress responses. The findings highlight Mct6’s importance in maintaining cochlear homeostasis via distinct molecular mechanisms in males and females.
