// Cochlear aging after synaptopathic noise: age-noise interactions in hair cell loss and axonal degeneration
// This study examined long-term degeneration of auditory-nerve fiber (ANF) peripheral axons after noise-induced synapse loss in mice. Using immunostaining and machine learning, they found immediate 50% synapse loss with minimal recovery, while axon loss occurred later and remained less severe even after two years. Despite synaptic damage, most ANF axons survived, maintaining spike generators and highlighting a prolonged opportunity for therapeutic intervention. Aging caused additional subtle pathologies but did not strongly worsen noise-induced damage.
