// Probing the Underlying Mechanisms of Spectro-Temporal Modulation Discrimination

// This study investigated how listeners discriminate upward- and downward-moving spectro-temporal modulations (STMs) using a reverse-correlation paradigm with different surround sound conditions. Results showed listeners mainly focused on upward-moving targets, with selective sensitivity reduction when surrounded by downward-moving STMs, indicating orientation-specific interference. Modulation filterbank models supported these findings, highlighting the importance of phase sensitivity, but could not fully explain individual variability in perception. The study advances understanding of STM discrimination mechanisms and demonstrates the value of reverse-correlation methods in auditory research.
