// Audiometric detection thresholds for older adults with normal and impaired hearing predict recognition of spectrally and temporally degraded speech in speech-modulated noise
// This study investigated how audiometric detection thresholds relate to recognition of degraded speech in noise among older adults with normal or impaired hearing. Using spectrally shaped speech stimuli and ESTOI-based measures, the research found that low-frequency (below 1 kHz) detection thresholds were the strongest predictors of speech recognition ability in noise. The effect varied with the type of speech distortion, especially for older adults with high-frequency hearing loss. The results highlight the importance of low-frequency cues for understanding speech in temporally modulated noisy environments in older listeners.
