// This study highlights the need for early and accurate identification of emergent bilingual kindergarteners as English learners, students with developmental language disorder (DLD), both, or neither. It assessed language skills of 24 Spanish-English bilingual kindergarteners and found nearly half were misclassified in their diagnoses. The authors recommend policy changes and early speech-language screenings by SLPs to improve correct identification. Proper differentiation can help avoid misclassification and negative long-term outcomes for these students.
