// This study examined cochlear implant (CI) use among 213,285 U.S. Veterans with severe bilateral hearing loss to assess rehabilitation patterns. Most Veterans (95.2%) received hearing aids, but only 2.5% underwent CI procedures despite poor speech understanding where CIs could be beneficial. Key factors influencing CI receipt included age, speech recognition, hearing loss severity, and comorbidities. The findings suggest that many Veterans who could benefit from CIs are treated mainly with hearing aids, indicating a need for improved, multifaceted care strategies within the VA.
