// This study investigated when children develop adult-like word recognition for unfamiliar accents in quiet and noisy settings and how phonetic distance affects this ability. Using a large cross-sectional sample, word recognition was tested across age groups (children, adolescents, adults) with accents varying in phonetic distance from a familiar accent. Results showed children struggled more than adults in all conditions, while adolescents approached adult performance only for accents phonetically close to the familiar accent in quiet, but not in noise. The findings indicate that fully mature processing of accented speech in noise takes over 15 years, highlighting challenges for children using sensory aids.
