// This study compared source-specific (independent) and conventional dynamic range compression (DRC) on sound quality for hearing-impaired listeners using speech in music and noise at various speech-to-background ratios. Independent DRC applied different release times to speech and background before mixing, while conventional DRC compressed the mixed signals uniformly. Results showed independent DRC improved overall sound quality, music pleasantness, and speech clarity at lower SBRs, with reduced noisiness compared to conventional DRC. These findings demonstrate that independent compression enhances sound quality for hearing loss across different backgrounds.
