// Peripheral phoneme encoding and discrimination in aging and hearing impairment

// This study investigated how aging, cochlear synaptopathy, and outer hair cell damage affect speech encoding and phoneme discrimination using EEG and behavioral tests targeting temporal envelope and fine structure cues. Results showed that high-frequency envelope-following responses decreased with age and combined hearing damage, while low-frequency envelope responses remained stable. Behaviorally, fine structure-based phoneme discrimination worsened with age and hair cell loss, but temporal envelope-based discrimination did not. The findings suggest that combining neural and behavioral measures can help detect early, hidden auditory deficits related to aging and hearing loss.
