// Speech perception deficits and neural network alterations during cocktail-party listening in age-related hearing loss
// This study examined how age-related hearing loss (ARHL) affects speech perception and brain activity during challenging listening tasks using behavioral tests and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Participants with ARHL showed poorer speech understanding and altered brain connectivity at rest and task-related brain responses were reduced compared to younger normal-hearing individuals. Older adults with ARHL also lacked brain-behavior coupling seen in younger adults, indicating reduced neural adaptability to listening demands. The findings suggest that speech difficulties in ARHL are linked to disrupted neural responses and impaired brain network flexibility.
