// This study investigated how phonology is activated during written word recognition in adolescents using a novel written word visual world paradigm. By tracking eye movements while participants identified words among phonological and orthographic competitors, the researchers found early and strong activation of phonological information. The results support the prelexical coding view that phonology is automatically engaged during reading and show that this activation is consistent and even stronger in adolescents compared to adults. These findings reinforce the importance of phonics-based approaches in reading instruction.
