// This study examined how highly proficient Polish-English bilinguals process irony in their native (L1) and second (L2) languages using neurophysiological measures. The N400 component showed greater effort for ironic statements only in L2, indicating higher cognitive load for irony in the second language. The late positive potential (LPP) suggested more reevaluation for irony in L1, but further analysis indicated similar reevaluation across languages. Overall, bilinguals find irony more cognitively demanding in L2, and ironic meaning is more strongly represented in L1.
