// Near-field recordings expose the limits of far-field measures of peripheral vestibular nerve activity: implications for experimental controls
// This study compares near-field (NF) facial nerve canal and far-field (FF) scalp recordings of vestibular short-latency evoked potentials (VsEPs) in guinea pigs. NF recordings near the vestibular nerve showed much larger amplitudes and higher signal-to-noise ratios than FF scalp responses. NF VsEPs more accurately reflected vestibular nerve function loss under hypoxia and neural blockade, while FF responses underestimated dysfunction and included non-neural signals. The findings highlight NF facial nerve canal recording as a more sensitive method for assessing vestibular nerve activity.
