// Excess Vowel Fusion in Hearing-Impaired Listeners Across Fundamental Frequency and Spatial Separation in the Free Field: An Alternative Mechanism for Difficulties With Speech in Noise
// This study examined whether vowel fusion and averaging occur with sounds presented from loudspeakers in a free-field environment, as previously seen with headphones. Synthesized vowels with varying fundamental frequencies were played from ±60° angles, and listeners reported hearing one or two vowels. Normal-hearing listeners showed less vowel fusion in free field compared to headphones, especially when vowel frequencies differed, while hearing-impaired listeners continued to experience high vowel fusion regardless of frequency differences. The results highlight that hearing-impaired individuals have persistent fusion issues affecting speech segregation even in more natural listening conditions.
