// Comparison of the Efficacy of Electrical Stimulation Modalities in Treating Post-Stroke Dysphagia: A Meta-Analysis
// This meta-analysis of 39 randomized controlled trials assessed the effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and peripheral electrical stimulation (PES) for post-stroke dysphagia. Electrical stimulation improved swallowing function in both short and long term on several clinical scales but did not affect transit times. Shorter daily sessions (<30 minutes) and total treatment durations (≤3 weeks) yielded better outcomes, with NMES showing stronger long-term benefits and tDCS providing immediate, lasting effects. The study concludes that electrical stimulation is effective for post-stroke dysphagia, with outcomes depending on stimulation type and treatment duration.
