// Age and reading ability shape white matter development across the lifespan: A cross-sectional study

// This study investigated white matter development related to reading in 126 Mandarin Chinese readers aged 7 to 77 using diffusion tensor imaging. Most reading-related tracts showed nonlinear age effects, with fractional anisotropy (FA) generally peaking midlife, while some tracts increased FA linearly with age. Word reading efficiency correlated positively with FA in several bilateral tracts, especially in younger individuals, but this relationship weakened or reversed in older adults. The results reveal complex, age-dependent changes in the brain’s white matter that support reading fluency across the lifespan in Chinese readers.
