// This study explored how musical sophistication relates to speech understanding in noisy environments (SPIN) and the cognitive factors involved. Using tests on 203 participants, researchers found that auditory working memory (AWM) fully mediated the link between musical sophistication and SPIN perception, while verbal working memory did not. Non-verbal intelligence partially mediated this relationship, but AWM remained a significant factor even after controlling for age and hearing. The results suggest that better auditory working memory explains why musically sophisticated individuals have improved speech perception in noise.
