// This study compared spelling errors of bilingual Spanish-English and monolingual English fifth graders and examined if vocabulary knowledge predicts spelling errors. Writing samples were analyzed for phonological, orthographic, and morphological errors, and vocabulary was measured by a standardized test. Results showed only whole-root morpheme substitution errors differed, occurring more in monolingual students, and higher vocabulary knowledge predicted fewer spelling errors. The findings highlight vocabulary’s role in spelling accuracy and inform tailored instruction for both bilingual and monolingual learners.
