// This study compared paired-comparison and cross-sectional methods for assessing 12-month speech changes in Parkinson’s disease across intelligibility, listener effort, and severity. Naive listeners judged speech samples from patients before and after deep brain stimulation or medical management using both methods. Results showed similar sensitivity for detecting changes in intelligibility between methods, but cross-sectional ratings were more sensitive for listener effort and severity. The study concludes that paired comparisons offer no clear advantage over traditional cross-sectional approaches for tracking speech changes in Parkinson’s disease.
