// Relationship between age-related hearing loss, phonological working memory, and global cognitive performance
// This study examined how hearing sensitivity and cognitive performance relate to phonological working memory, measured by nonword repetition, in adults aged 55-80. Both poorer hearing and cognition independently predicted lower nonword repetition accuracy, with hearing having a stronger effect. Nonword repetition partially explained the link between hearing loss and cognitive decline. These findings suggest that degraded hearing limits phonological processing and highlight nonword repetition as a useful measure of combined auditory and cognitive function in older adults.
