Participants judged loudness changes in tones that either increased or decreased in level, reporting greater changes for rising tones. The loudness model accurately predicted these asymmetries, which grew with higher sound levels. The findings suggest the asymmetry in loudness perception can be explained without invoking an evolutionary bias.
