// Upward Effortful Pitch Glide as a Predictor of Pharyngeal Constriction in Individuals With Upper Versus Lower Motor Neuron Lesions
// This study assessed whether nasoendoscopy ratings of maximum pharyngeal constriction during an effortful pitch glide predict pharyngeal area during swallowing in people with upper (UMN) versus lower motor neuron (LMN) lesions. Using retrospective data from 46 individuals, expert judges rated pharyngeal constriction and compared it to swallowing measures from VFSS. Ratings reliably predicted normal swallowing measurements in the LMN group but not in the UMN group. Thus, volitional pharyngeal constriction during nasoendoscopy may better predict swallowing function in LMN lesions than in UMN lesions.
