// Normative Ranges for Auditory Brainstem Response Wave I Amplitude: A Potential Diagnostic Indicator of Cochlear Deafferentation

// This study aimed to establish normative ranges for auditory brainstem response (ABR) Wave I amplitude to detect cochlear synaptopathy in individuals with normal hearing. Researchers generated ABR normative data from a low-risk population and compared it with a high-risk group of military Veterans having auditory complaints. They found that sex-specific ABR Wave I amplitude ranges effectively distinguish high-risk individuals with cochlear deafferentation without needing adjustment for outer hair cell dysfunction. These findings suggest clinicians can use sex-specific ABR norms to identify cochlear synaptopathy in patients with normal audiograms.
