// Low-Intensity Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission Protocols in Infants and Young Children: Contributions of Age-Specific Ear Characteristics

// This study examined how outer and middle ear development affects distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in children aged 6 days to 5 years using wideband tympanometry (WBT) and DPOAE measurements at two stimulus intensities. Results showed that younger children had higher DPOAE levels and absorbance, especially at high frequencies, reflecting maturation of ear structures. Lower stimulus levels reduced DPOAE amplitudes and increased absent responses, but signal-to-noise ratios mostly remained adequate. The study concludes that age-specific norms improve interpretation of DPOAEs due to developmental changes in ear anatomy influencing sound transmission.
