// How Temporal Overlap in Task Processing and Acoustic Load Affect Listening Effort in Adults

// This study investigated how timing between tasks (stimulus onset asynchrony, SOA), noise, and room acoustics affect listening effort in adults. Using a dual-task paradigm, they found that shorter SOAs increased response times and subjective effort, even when speech clarity stayed high. Noise increased effort only at longer SOAs, while very short SOAs overwhelmed cognitive capacity, making SOA a stronger factor than noise. Mild reverberation surprisingly reduced listening effort compared to no reverberation in quiet conditions.
