// Age-related changes in acoustic cue use for speech-in-speech perception
// This study examined how pitch and spatial acoustic cues help listeners separate speech streams in noise and how aging affects this ability. Adults aged 18-74 completed speech-in-speech tasks using pitch, spatial, or combined cues, while hearing thresholds, brainstem responses, and cognitive scores were measured. Older adults performed worse across all cue conditions, with standard hearing loss predicting pitch cue use and extended high-frequency loss predicting spatial cue use. Cognitive capacity influenced performance in harder conditions, suggesting both auditory and cognitive declines reduce older adults' ability to use acoustic cues for speech segregation.
