// Formant-frequency encoding in the inferior colliculus of awake rabbit: Physiological and model responses

// This study examined how neurons in the inferior colliculus (IC) of awake rabbits respond to synthetic vowel sounds with varied formant bandwidths, testing a hypothesis that increased bandwidth reduces neural fluctuation contrast and speech discrimination. Using two stimulus paradigms, results showed IC neuron firing rates were higher for narrower bandwidths and not solely driven by energy cues. Neural response patterns correlated with sensitivity to frequency sweeps and supported the idea that IC neurons encode vowels via neural-fluctuation profiles. A model including inhibition and excitation accurately explained neuron responses across different bandwidths and stimulus conditions.
