// Early Organization of Simultaneous Multimodal Behaviors: Perception- and Production-Based Contingencies as a Scaffold for Language Development
// This study examined how 3- and 6-month-old infants coordinate vocal, gaze, facial, and manual signals during natural caregiver interactions to understand early multimodal communication. Using detailed frame-by-frame coding and statistical analysis of 20 Hebrew-learning infants, researchers found infants used about one third of possible behavior combinations, with a small subset dominating. Patterns shifted with age, and a key early multimodal factor correlated with productive vocabulary at 15 months. The results suggest early integrated multimodal behaviors support contingency learning and predict later language development.
