// This study investigated how potassium chloride (KCl) influences involuntary swallowing initiation by infusing solutions into the hypopharynx of volunteers at different rates. Using electromyography to measure swallowing muscle activity, results showed that at a low infusion rate, KCl did not significantly enhance swallowing beyond water, but at a higher rate, KCl facilitated swallowing more than water or saline. The findings suggest that KCl's effect on swallowing depends on infusion rate and possibly involves multiple sensory inputs. Thus, higher KCl infusion rates can enhance swallowing initiation through combined sensory mechanisms.
