// Effects of gap onset time and gap duration on the deviant-related negativity in typically developing school-age children
// This study tested whether automatic change detection (deviant-related response, DRN) to within-stimulus silent gaps depends on gap duration and timing, and whether children and adults differ, using passive EEG to 500-ms noise bursts with 10- or 30-ms gaps at six onset times plus a separate active gap-detection task (d'). DRN amplitude increased with gap duration and decreased as gap onset was delayed; DRNs were absent at 400 ms, adults showed a small DRN at 300 ms, while children showed significant DRNs only for 30-ms gaps at 15 and 50 ms. Behavioral sensitivity was high overall but lower in children and did not correlate with DRN amplitude. Thus automatic gap detection is temporally constrained and more limited in children, and active detection appears to recruit mechanisms beyond those indexed by the passive DRN.
