// Are there distinctive EEG Signatures of tinnitus-related emotional distress? Evidence from spectral parameterization and source-level functional connectivity

// This study used resting-state EEG with spectral parameterization and source-level phase-locking value (PLV) to identify neural oscillatory and connectivity features linked to subjective tinnitus and its emotional distress. Compared with controls, tinnitus patients had a higher aperiodic exponent—suggesting altered cortical excitation–inhibition balance—and a reduced alpha peak frequency in temporal regions, indicating slowing of auditory cortical oscillations. Connectivity analysis showed increased synchronization within and between auditory and parietal regions, but decreased connectivity between auditory regions and the anterior cingulate and prefrontal cortex. These altered oscillatory and connectivity patterns point to abnormal auditory-network synchronization tied to tinnitus-related distress and may inform future neuromodulatory interventions, differing somewhat from patterns seen in primary depressive disorders.
