// Distinguishing Misophonia From Nonclinical Sound Aversion: Emotional Response Profiles for Auditory Triggers

// This study tested whether people with clinically significant misophonia differ from typical sound-averse controls in trigger sounds, emotion types, and reaction intensities. One hundred sixty-eight adults (84 misophonia, 84 controls) completed the DVMSQ and a 37-sound trigger checklist rating emotional responses and intensity; demographics and comorbidities were examined and results visualized with heat maps. The misophonia group reported more triggers, much higher emotional intensity, and markedly greater anger and disgust—especially to human eating/oral sounds—whereas controls mainly reported irritation. Emotional response type and intensity (not demographics or comorbidities) distinguished clinical misophonia and may help clinicians identify cases needing intervention.
