// The Effect of Carbonated Liquid on Swallowing Safety of People with Parkinson Disease (DYSparkLE): A Prospective Within-Subject, Repeated-Measures Observational Study

// This study tested whether drinking carbonated liquid (CL) improves swallowing safety in 83 people with Parkinson disease using flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), comparing 5 and 90 mL non-carbonated and carbonated liquids with depth of airway invasion (DAI) at 90 mL as the primary outcome. Multilevel logistic regression showed CL significantly reduced the odds of airway invasion versus non-carbonated liquid. Exploratory subgroup analysis indicated greater benefit in patients reporting fewer dysphagia symptoms and less benefit when laryngeal sensitivity was impaired. Overall, CL produced significantly fewer unsafe swallows and could be useful in individualized assessment and rehabilitation, warranting further mechanistic study.
